Condolence From: Tom & Martha Stokes
Condolence: We had the honor and privilege to meet Tom several years ago by literally being in the right place at the right time. Tom hit a deer late one night near Quantico, Va. My husband stopped to help. He brought him back to our house in Stafford and then drove him back to his hotel near D.C. He was so grateful to us, but little did he know how blessed we were to get to know him. We now live in North Carolina and realized something was wrong when the Christmas card we sent came back undelivered.
Rest in peace Tom. You won't be forgotten.

He chose to only serve with the finest--USMC and NYPD.
He will be missed down here.

Condolence: In the best possible way, Tom seemed devoid of ego. He gave and gave and never looked for praise or reward. But we hope he knew how much he was respected and we hope the world remembers his name. Tom Nerney was one in a billion.

Condolence: I had the privilege of meeting Tom through my former Chief of Police Tom Moore (also a retired Marine) and immediately developed a friendship I will remember for ever. Tom and I exchanges e-mails three or four times a week and I would call him every so often just to talk about nothing in particular. I also made it a point to call Tom every Veteran's Day and thank him for his service, because without men such as him I wouldn't have the freedom to make such a call. I think Tom was surprised the first time I called him on Christmas Eve. I remember he asked why I wasn't home and I told him I was calling friends and family to wish them a happy holiday. After the first one he never sounded surprised again.
I will miss my e-mails from Tommy. I will miss my phone conversations with Tommy. It was my privilege and honor to know you!
God bless you sir.

Condolence: Tom, I met you many years ago in the 70's when I was a young Sergeant in ND6. Through the years I have been privileged to run into you on many occasions and work with you in the Major Case Squad. It was a great office with many fine detectives and you were among the very best. The Marine Corps was another common bond that we shared. For those who read this take note that Tom loved the Corps and he loved Marines. When Marines in the desert were taking severe wounds riding in lightly armored vehicles Tommy put out the word that he needed bullet proof vests no longer needed by Police Officers to pad the vehicles. In no time at all he had more than he could have imagined and made several trips to Camp Lejeune to deliver them to vulnerable Marines. When he learned that "Baby Wipes" helped Marines in the sand he again sounded the call that resulted in a tractor truck load of "Baby Wipes" arriving in time for Marines scheduled to be imminently deployed.
And it does not end there with Tom. He spent many nights and early morning hours sitting by the bedside of wounded and paralyzed PO Stephen McDonald to make sure that his breathing apparatus remained functional. There are endless stories of compassion and love he showed to his fellow men. Tom was not big enough and ,sadly, did not have enough time to do all that he wanted to do but he did all that he could with the energy and time that God gave him. Godspeed Tommy. Semper Fidelis Marine.

Condolence: When I received to notification of Tom's passing, it was noted he has no family. I can assure you Tom had a family of thousands who knew and admired him during his many years in the NYPD. Tom Nearney was looked upon as an outstanding investigator and and dedicated NYPD Detective. His reputation for excellence was nationally known by his colleagues both in and out of the department. It was my pleasure to have been associated with Tom during many Kidnap Investigations. I will always remember Tom as the ultimate professional who served his Country in the (U.S. Marines)and NYPD with distinction and honor. My wife and I pray that God has welcomed 1st. Grade Detective Thomas Nearney into "The Kingdom of Heaven" where he will always be granted eternal peace and happiness... Sincerely, Bob Benz(Ret.NYPD/TARU
