Obituary for Patrick J. McGovern
Patrick Joseph McGovern, of Richmond Hill, Queens, NY, loving husband and father
of three children passed away on Sunday July 5, 2020 at the age of 85.
Patrick was born in Glangevlin, County Cavan, Republic of Ireland on November 12,
1934, and moved to New York with his mother Mary Anne McGovern in 1936. He
married Emily Anne Klch on November 9, 1968 and together they raised three
children, Patrick, Michael, and Elizabeth. Patrick was raised in Woodhaven, New
York, alongside his brother Tommy. He attended the Brooklyn Technical High
School, and after graduation, pursued a career as a machinist following his passion
for all things technical. He worked for Sperry’s and Grumman’s for 13 years where
he built components for numerous engineering projects including the lunar rover
that later was used on the Apollo Missions to the Moon. He shifted careers becoming
a correction officer, and rose to the rank of Captain, retiring after 22 years of service
to New York City.
As a young man, Patrick practiced Judo for years, becoming a blackbelt and winning
several medals in major East Coast championships. He was also an avid skier and fell
in love with Vermont, bought land, and built a log cabin with Emily in Ludlow in
1974, a place, which his family is forever grateful for the so many wonderful
memories. He loved a good discussion, and telling stories of his childhood, time as a
machinist, and correction officer that had us all rolling with laughter. He was also an
avid reader, and never stopped wanting to learn, including to the end of his life. His
example has been an inspiration to his children to work hard, seek joy in life, and be
your best.
Patrick died peacefully with his family by his side after battling cancer for several
years. Patrick is survived by his loving wife Emily, and three children Patrick,
Michael, and Elizabeth, and their families including grandchildren Ava, Julia,
Maureen, Marcus, and Cormac. We love him and miss him very much. You will be
sorely missed. May you roam in green fields evermore. Patrick’s wake will be held
at the Leo F Kearns Funeral Home, 85-66 115 th St, Richmond Hill, NY 11418 between
2-4 PM and 7-9 PM on Wednesday July 8, and Church Services held at the Holy Child
Jesus Catholic Church on Thursday July 9 at 9:15 AM.
