How fortunate I feel to have Ruth in my life as my sister and as a friend. I remember when I first came to the US and she came to the airport to welcome me. We immediately became friends.

Later on she let me live in her home when times were challenging and uncertain for me. Living in Ruth’s home was such formative experience. She was so supportive and I gave me the opportunity to learn and practice English with her. She encouraged me go to college and become a teacher, following her footsteps. When I graduated from Hunter College she was there with me celebrating the achievement.

It was wonderful that Ruth and I shared similar interests, we enjoyed going to movies in Kew Gardens, going out to dinner, going to the US Open every year to cheer the Spanish and Latino tennis players. I also had the wonderful experience of traveling with Ruth to Paris on vacation, we visited museums and historical sites, including Notre Dame Cathedral and Versailles.

Ruth was a teacher, a counselor and a mentor to thousands of young people. Her altruism was rooted in her faith, and she impacted positively the lives of many of us with her sound counsel and more importantly with her example of living life with joy, virtue, wisdom and generosity.

I will always be grateful for her love and support to Billy and I. She always welcomed us with love and respect. This meant so much to us since at that time it was hard for us to find acceptance. She treated Billy like a brother in law always, they became good friends. Billy is heartbroken with her passing but also grateful to have her as a sister in law and as a friend over the years.

Ruth lives a meaningful life Ruth. She raised two daughters who are amazing human beings. She loved them deeply and raised them to be strong, accomplished and wonderful persons, Kandisse and Bianca are her most precious legacy. Ruth’s grandchildren were her joy and the source of great happiness.

We will always love Ruth, our sister, friend, teacher, counselor and mentor. We will continue to draw wisdom from her example, cherish the memories we shared with her, and try to emulate her goodness, generosity, wisdom and empathy.

Love you Ruth,

Orlando

My very own "That Girl."
Memorial Essay for Aunt

One of my gifts in life was to have a "cool aunt" that was classy and independent.

I don't know if you remember the show "That Girl" with Marlo Thomas but it was the first show with a female protagonist that lived independently on her own.

My aunt struck me as "That Girl." She was elegantly dressed, had her own apartment in Manhattan, and she even had a boyfriend named Donald like the show.

Donald and my aunt and I would go out on dates. I recognized that I was a chaperone, even at age 5. My aunt showed me what classy dates where all about, enjoying outdoor patios on New York's West Side.

My aunt showed generous behavior and she married a man that matched her generosity, Carlos.

One time I showed up on their doorstep after losing a job and a love all at once. I was only 18.

My aunt overheard me trying to get my love back, only my love was not a male.

My aunt grabbed my face when I came out of the room and said
"whoever you are and whatever you do, know I will always love you."

I guess she didn't mind me being independent either! I always remembered this as apparently her love was unconditional!

I had lost a summer job lead but I found another one and my Aunt and Carlos let me stay the whole summer! What big people. I was so awkward with interviews and clothes. I got a job selling for a barter club and got to show off buying my friends seafood dinner in the Village.

My aunt showed her prowess encouraging people and got a Master's degree later in life, showing you can always start fresh! She became the Guidance Counselor at my uncle's small school he had started for disadvantaged children that wanted to go to college.

Aptly named "Progress," my Aunt looked after all the kids, and the first year's graduating class had every kid getting into college. My Aunt must have done a good job.

She showed some signs of stress at first, absorbing other people's lives and pain, but she learned as she went.

I always admired how she was great with her own family and that there was humor in the house all the time. I'm sure this was not as easy as it looked. She always had a place to stay and her and Carlos provided easy conversation and humor.

She also looked after my baby Uncle like nobody's business. Even when some of his secret resentments would come out (he was always busy being nice to the human race) she really looked after him even until his last breath. This made her look like a SuperHero to me along with everything else she did.

My Aunt got a "mystery cirrhosis" and passed away this week. I tried to send healing energy and got a "No." Hmm, I thought. I decided I would "visit" from afar a few times. I tried to send it again this week and I heard in her voice "I made up my mind." "Ok!" I said on my invisible telephone to her.

I remember feeling accepted by her. Acceptance is such an incredible gift.

I remember feeling seen by her. That's a really incredible gift also.

I love you Titi, to me you'll always be "That Girl."

Beloved Tia Ruth (aunt Ruth)

I had the pleasure, privilege and honor to have met (and spent precious time) with our beloved aunt Ruth. She was so loving, special and welcoming to anyone who met her.
I always held her in high regards, and she always had a smile on her face (every time that I saw her), or she would put a smile on your face (after spending some time with her).
She supported me, helped me, encouraged me and always gave me great advice.

I'm so heart broken, but I know that she's at peace in heaven.

She and Uncle Carlos raised two beautiful daughters (who also have the same qualities as their mother, and who are loved, cherished, admired and respected by the entire family).

My deepest condolences to Uncle Carlos, Kandisse, Bianca, Colin, Kensington, Ashton and little Sebastian
(as well as Birt and Sebastian).

I hope that you find the strength and peace of mind to get through these difficult times.

We're all here for you.

With love and respect:

Nicolas Calderon
